Joan Rivers, 81, passed away today.
In a statement, her daughter said, “It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17 p.m. surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother. Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated. My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.”
Last Thursday Rivers stopped breathing during a surgical procedure on her vocal cords. She then had to be rushed from the clinic to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she was placed in a medically induced coma and then on life support.
The hilarious television presence first made her mark on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1965. By 1983 she was the permanent guest host for whenever Carson took the night off.
She was more recently known for the show Fashion Police on E!, where she, alongside Giuliana Rancic, Kelly Osbourne, and George Kotsiopoulos, celebrated and skewered celebrity fashion on a weekly basis. Her last show was a 90 minute special last Tuesday, examining the fashion from both the VMAs and Emmy Awards, and I’m happy to say I watched it.
Her humor was at times inappropriate and could make you cringe, but at the same time it usually made you laugh.
Her three co-hosts all shared their feelings today, and clearly are having a tough time with her passing.
Giuliana said, “It is almost impossible to describe how much I adored Joan and how much she has meant to me. She was not only the funniest women I have ever met but was incredibly loving, honest, and lived her life with no regrets. Working with her for the last 13 years has been one of the true joys of my life. She could put a smile on your face instantly no matter how hard your day was. My heart goes out to Melissa and Cooper, who have lost something that can never be replaced. Their bond was truly one-of-a-kind. They had the greatest mother and grandmother anyone could have ever hoped for. My life is so much fuller and happier because I got to share it with this beautiful person, a true genius. I woke up today unable to grasp what the world will be like without her and, at the same time, feel so privileged to have called her my friend.”
Kelly shared, “I’m completely heartbroken by the loss of my beloved Joan. Not only was she my boss, she was and will always be my teacher, therapist, closest friend, inspiration and the only grandmother I ever knew. She was family and I will never forget her. Laughter will be difficult for a while but when I’m sad, lonely or upset all I will have to do is think of Joan and a smile will cross my face. Laughter is what she gave us and laughter is what she would want us to do in remembrance of her. Melissa and Cooper, my thoughts are with you and I love you both so much. Joan, thank you for taking me in and loving me as a daughter. I will miss you deeply and will always hear your voice in my head saying ‘my darling get out there and be you!’”
George simply stated on Twitter, “Rest in peace @Joan_Rivers. Thank you for changing my life. I will miss you so much.”
Joan Rivers will definitely be missed, both by her own family, the E! family, and her many fans around the world.
